This was the first really cold hike of the season. It has been unseasonably warn until now, but I really had to bundle up for this hike. I parked at the Reeves Meadow hiker's trailhead, and took the Pine Meadow Trail for a very brief moment and veered off at the Reeves Brook Trail. This trail slowly climbs the mountain through a very scenic forest route on the side of the small Reeves Brook. I took the Reeve's Brook Trail to the Seven Hills Trail, which I then took south to the Torne View. The Torne view is an excellent one. From there continued along the notch right before the HTS Trail, and then descended the mountain on the Seven Hills Trail, and took this route al the way back to the Pine Meadow which is right by Reeves Brook.

The fall foliage was almost completely over, though this was a very nice late autumn day. I had last done this trail around 2 years prior in the winter in the snow, but I had only done the route coming down the good scramble. I had always meant to return here when the weather was nice to climb up the scramble, and this was the oppurtunity.

We started at the Reeves Meadow Visitors Center off 7 Lakes Drive near Sloatsburg, and headed up the Reeves Brook Trail for a short duration. Where the trail turns and crosses the stream we continued straight along the unmarked trail which intersects the 7 Hills Trail. From there continued on the 7 Hills Trail along the pretty scenery and Mountain Laurels until the intersection of the HTS trail terminus. At that point we took the HTS and took it up the mountain to the really nice scramble ascending Ramapo Torne. This mountain has a very jagged top with a great climb and outstanding views in 3 directions. From the top summit view, we descended down on the 7 Hills, and then took this route back to the trailhead.

This was another day of the hottest heat wave of the summer. Temperatures were in the upper 90s, but we were mostly in the shade.  July 4th was on Sunday, and this was July 5th so we were off for the Holiday. We started at the Reeves Meadow Visitor Center on 7 Lakes Drive and took the Pine Meadow Trail and headed east till the Stony Brook Trail to the Kakiat Trail. Continued along the Kakiat Trail till the Seven Hills Trail, and then veered off north on the Seven Hills up the scramble, and then continued to the great view on the top. It is interesting that the trail conference maps don't show the view lookout here despite this being one of the best lookouts in the park.

Continued to the intersection of the Hillburn Torne Sebage (HTS) Trail on top of Diamond Mnt, and headed down the HTS back toward the Pine Meadow Brook valley. From there took the Pine Meadow Trail back to the trailhead.

North Hill

Harriman State Park,
Rockland County,
New York

Total Time: 2 Hours
Total Distance: About 4 miles

This was another gorgeous late summer day. The weather was about 75 degrees with little humidity. I finally had my camera back. I parked at the Reeves Meadow Visitor Center off 7 Lakes Drive in Sloatsburg, and took the Reeves Brook Trail up until the intersection of the 7 Hills Trail. Then took the 7 Hills Trail up the scramble which leads to an excellent view. This scramble, although short, is one of the best in the park. Took the 7 Hills up to the top of the North Hill, where there is a really good Panorama through the brush. Much of North Hill along this trail is not forested and just contains brush and short shrubs - this is presumably the result of a significant forest fire many years ago. Continued along the 7 Hills Trail down to the valley where I picked up the Pine Meadow Trail, and went down the Pine Meadow Trail, switched along the new trail to the Stony Brook Trail, and back to the Pine Meadow Trail and back to the car.

Estimated Length: 4 Miles
Estimated Time: 2:30 Hours

Started at the Reeves Meadow Visitor Center on 7 Lakes Drive near Sloatsburg. Started at the Pine Meadow Trail and headed east till the Stony Brook Trail to the Kakiat Trail. Headed east on the Kakiat Trail until the Seven Hills Trail. Headed north on the Seven Hills up the screen scramble, and up to the great view on the top. Continued to the intersection of the Hillburn Torne Sebage (HTS) Trail, and headed down the HTS back toward the Pine Meadow Brook valley. From there took the Pine Meadow Trail back to the trailhead.

My camera had broken so we couldn't get good photos from this hike. I had to use my cell phone camera and Shimmy's cell phone camera. The weather was also very poor being very humid with an overcast and rainy sky, thus the photo quality is very poor.
