Tom Jones and Parker Cabin Mountain Brush Fire

Harriman State Park,
Orange Co.,
New York

Hiking Trails:
Victory Trail: Blue blaze
Ramapo-Dunderberg (R-D) Trail Trail: Red blaze

Total Time: 1:25 hour
Estimated Distance: 2.2 Miles

Pros: Remote area in Harriman, Excellent Views
Cons: Damage from brush fire

Hiking Partner: Shimmy Rosenberg

Aside from the brush fires at Catamount and Panther Mountains in Harriman, I had heard that there was another large fire at Tom Jones Mountain. Shimmy and I drove up to see the area post fire and how extensive the burn area was. We took two cars; one car we left at the R-D Trailhead by Tom Jones, and the other we left down the road at the Victory Trail trailhead, where we started the hike.

While driving up, we noticed the burn zone starting right before the the R-D Trailhead. The area looked pretty extensive and went all the way to the next trailhead by the Victory Trail. The fires did not appear to cross the road. The burn zone was very extensive - it covered the area from the road all the way to the second Parker Cabin Mountain view, as well as all of Tom Jones mountain. The damage was very extensive, with much of the lower brush, such as huckleberries and ferns, burnt up. Much of the mountain laurel forest was also affected, though I did notice moisture in many of the burnt plants. Some larger trees were felled by the fire, but for the most part their bottoms were burnt but they survived the fire.

We started the hike at the Victory Trail, walked through the burnt mountain laurel forest, and then took the R-D Trail as it ascends up Parker Cabin Mountain. We went up to the second view atop Parker Cabin Mountain before turning around. We went back along the R-D Trail, and cut across slightly on a bushwack shortcut back to the notch where the R-D Trail meets the Victory Trail. We then took the R-D Trail up Tom Jones Mountain, over the hump of the mountain, and then down to the trailhead.

It had been extremely cold over the weekend, with lows on Saturday just shy of 2 degrees! As you can see from the first picture below, the temperate right before we headed out was 10 degrees. However, the forecast called for a big warm up on Sunday, and although we started out all bundled up, by the time the hike was over, it was already above freezing. In fact, it had rained heavily all afternoon evening as the temperature further warmed up. At the time of the hike, there was still a fresh layer of about six inches of snow from the storm on Thursday and Friday.

We had driven around looking to see if the lakes were frozen, and we met up with a ranger who said that none are yet posted as safe. The problem with this winter so far is that although it has gotten very cold, the weather is very inconsistent and then after excruciating cold it warms up to very high temperatures. This prevents the lakes from freezing over and allowing hiking on them.

We parked on Lake Kanawauke Road (County Route 106) at the trailhead and climbed up the Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail to the top of Tom Jones Mountain. This mountain is a good but short climb offering outstanding views at its summit. We veered off to the shelter on the southern flank of the mountain, and then continued down the mountain on the trail. We then took the Victory Trail south and west, and looped back at the unmarked trail after the trail bend. We then took this trail back to the Victory Trail, all the way to the end of the trail by the road. We then walked along the side of the road adjacent to the swamp back to our car.

It was different being back to the east coast after my trip to Arizona. It was a nice winter day in New York, where I hiked this relatively short and tranquil hike. I parked on the trailhead on Lake Kanawauke Rd (County Route 106) and took the Victory Trail for a short distance to the intersection of the Ramapo Dunderberg Trail. I headed south on the Ramapo Dunderberg slowly climbing Parker Cabin Mountain, where there are two very nice views here. From there headed down the mountain to the White Bar Trail, which i took to the Triangle Trail, and then back to the Ramapo-Dunderberg and Victory for the return.

This was our first fall hike. It was really the very beginning of the foliage colors, and almost all the trees were still green. Nevertheless there were still some good colors to be found. We parked on Lake Kanawauke Road (County 106) after the Little Long Pond, at the R-D trail parking area. Climbed up Tom Jones Mountain, which is a very short but steep hike up the mountain, with a nice view on top. The Catskill Mountains are visible from the summit to the far north. Continued down the R-D, where it intersected with the Victory Trail. Headed south on the Victory, and took the unblazed shortcut bypass road, and then continued along the trail to Lake Skenonto. Lake Skenonto is a very pretty and isolated like in Harriman with no public roads leading to it.

We intented to take the Trianlge Trail up Parker Cabin Mountain, but got distracted and went about 800 feet beyond the intersection before turning around back to the Trianlge Trail, which slowly climbs up Parker Cabin Mountain. The last stretch up Parker Cabin Mountain is a really good and steep scramble. From the top of Parker Cabin Mountain, which has a great view of Lake Sebago, went north on the R-D Trail, and by the previous intersection at the vallery between Parker Cabin and Tom Jones Mountains, we took the Victory Trail back to the road, and then headed along the road past the side of the swamp. This swamp was made by beavers and trees down by beavers with the characteristic bite marks are present in this swamp.
